INTERNET IN FRANCE
Since its creation thirty years ago, the use of the Internet in France has gradually and rapidly increased. During the Nineties, the Internet, primarly a network dominated by students and scientists, grew and became a widely accepted form of social communication. Nowadays, there is a growing wave of a broader range of French users and nothing seems to happen without the Internet playing a role.
- 16.4 million French people over 11 years surf on the web a least once a month (February 2002 figures by Médiamétrie).
- 40 percent of the French population over 15 years old are connected to the Internet from their office or from home (January 2002 figures by Ipsos).
- 31 percent of the French population connect from their house whereas 20 percent connect from their office (February 2002 figures by Ipsos).
- 6.1 million French people over 11 years old (which represents 12 percent of the French population) download files (February 2002 figures by Médiamétrie).
Among which:
- 50 percent are musical files.
- 31.6 percent are video files.
- 62.1 percent are softwares.
- 39 percent of the French surfers have a cable or a DSL access from their office and 14 percent from their house (January 2002 figures by Ipsos).
- 44 percent of the French surfers connect every day, 38 percent two or three times a week and 17 percent at least once a month (January 2002 figures by Ipsos).
- 34 percent of the French surfers buy on the web (December 2001 figures by Médiangles).
- 57 percent of the French surfers are between 15 and 34 years old (February 2002 figures by Ipsos)./.
