The traditional term “Chancery” refers to the small team of diplomats who serve as the Ambassador’s closest collaborators inside the Political Section. The Deputy Chief of Mission assists and stands in for the Ambassador in the exercise of his duties, with the aid of the First Counselor. When the Ambassador is absent, he acts on his behalf as the “Chargé d’Affaires.”

Each of the Chancery’s counselors deals with a particular category of issues connected with the conduct of French foreign policy. They prepare papers for the Ambassador, inform Paris of developments taking place in their respective spheres, emphasize France’s positions, and work with American authorities to promote common French-American objectives on the international scene. They carry out their mission largely thanks to close cooperation with other Embassy Departments.
